One of my favorite topics to browse in January are the annual trend predictions for design, fashion, and current events. I think as consumers we love to know what’s coming, and to decide whether we’re going to opt in or out for any given trend.
Interior design trends don’t typically turn over as often as, say, fashion, but we do see changes in consumer tastes and preferences over time. As with anything else, our trends tend to be cyclical – just look at the comeback wallpaper has had, and you’ll see what I mean.
As I sat down to write this post, I asked myself what I heard most from clients over the past year. What are the pain points that drive people to make changes in their home? What is driving the need for home renovations this year? The answer? We all have a deep desire for comfort and individuality at home. From warm, earthy colors to cozy textures, this year’s trends seem to say that we’re all hoping that our home can be a place of peace and solace. There’s a lot that we can’t control in the world, so we’re focusing on the things we can control – like how our homes make us feel.
With that in mind, here are the top 3 trends that I predict we’ll see this year:
- Velvet. Bouclé is taking a back seat as velvet and chenille step into the spotlight, gracing everything from furnishings to accessories. There was a time when velvet felt very formal, but now it’s all about how it’s used. As drapery, for example, velvet is definitely going to lean heavy and formal, but a velvet throw pillow? It’s the perfect blend of subtle luxury and everyday comfort. Imagine sinking into a sofa, your feet tucked up beneath you, and your arm draped over a soft velvet throw pillow – the very definition of cozy! I’m seeing a lot of performance velvet, jewel-toned velvet, and mohair hitting the market. Now is the perfect time to lean into the trend.
- Rich Colors. Color has been back for the past few years, but I don’t think this trend is going away anytime soon. We want rich, saturated colors in our homes these days. We trended toward white and gray for so long that we’re all begging to add some personality and feeling back into our spaces. Color is a fantastic way to impact your mood – in fact, just Google “color psychology” and you’ll find thousands of articles explaining how certain colors can change the way you feel, think, act, and even eat (it’s wild). I recommend mid-tone colors for most people, especially if you’re dipping your toe into the color world. While I love a color-drenched, moody space, those bolder choices may feel too intense for some people. The best part about color is you can play with it as much or as little as you want. Go all in with paint or just add a few pops of color in your accessories. This one can be tailored to you!
- Curation. The best designs are layered but uncomplicated, telling the stories of the people who live there or the people who came before. There’s the painting by your grandmother next to the vase you got for your wedding. The vintage dresser topped with a family photo from your last vacation. Now more than ever, we are curating our spaces to be intentionally personal and imperfect. Everything is there because it was chosen – it means something, came from someone special, or we felt a connection to it. We’re not buying for the sake of buying in 2025. We’re looking for that special piece that will bring the whole space together. I think we’ll see a lot more interesting, lived in spaces this year. Less editorial, and more real.
So there you have it! I can’t wait to see if my predictions come true.
In the meantime, I’ll be saving tons of inspiration for these trends over on Pinterest.
I also send out a monthly newsletter where I share local business that you can shop to find the handmade, custom, and vintage items you may be looking for to curate your home. Sign up here if you want to be on the list for the next one! Just scroll to the bottom of the page and hit subscribe.
