The best websites, in my opinion, are the ones with deep archives of helpful content—where all I have to do is type in a question and instantly find the answers I need. I’m the kind of person who researches extensively before ever picking up the phone, and I certainly wouldn’t book a service without first understanding what it entails, what it costs, and how to get started. If you’re the same way, you’re in the right place.

That’s exactly why I’m launching a new blog series. Each week, I’ll be answering a frequently asked question—some specific to my design services, others covering the broader world of interior design or common design challenges. My goal is to create a resource that makes it easier for you to get the information you need, on your own time, no phone call required. Whether we work together on a project or not, I hope you’ll find this series valuable!

Without further ado, today’s question is: “What does full-service interior design include?”

You probably see the phrase “full-service” used a lot on interior designers’ websites. It’s not just a marketing tool – in the design world, “full-service” design differentiates designers who will work with you from the initial brainstorming (well before construction begins) all the way through the final pillow fluff from those who specialize in just one or two phases of the overall project. Let me break that down.

Full-service interior design typically includes all of the following project phases:

  1. Programming – This is the information-gathering phase. It includes in-home consultations, measurements, photography, and lots of communication with you to understand your needs, goals, and design preferences.
  2. Conceptual Design – Once the scope of your project is clear, we start sketching floor plans, gathering inspiration, discussing rough budgets with contractors, and shaping the initial vision.
  3. Design Development – With a clear concept in place, we get into the details. Sketches turn into construction documents, materials and furnishings are sourced, samples are pulled, and pricing is finalized. This phase culminates in a design presentation where you review and approve the full plan.
  4. Procurement – This is the purchasing phase. A full-service designer handles every step, from placing orders to managing deliveries and resolving any issues—like damaged items or discontinued materials—before they ever become your problem.
  5. Project Management – If construction is part of your project, this phase runs alongside procurement. A full-service designer conducts site visits, ensures the design plan is being followed (and that any necessary changes or decisions your contractor makes align with the design goals), troubleshoots issues, and communicates with contractors to keep the project moving smoothly.
  6. Installation + Styling – Finally, once the construction is done and the dust is cleared, a full-service designer will oversee delivery and installation of all of your new furniture and style your space with those final touches that showcase your designer home.

Some designers choose to specialize in select phases, such as Design Development or Installation + Styling, and will refer you to another designer for the other phases. These designers provide expert guidance on specific aspects of your project but don’t oversee the entire process from start to finish.

There are advantages to both models—it all comes down to what you need. If you want someone to manage the whole project so you don’t have to worry about the details, a full-service designer is the way to go. But if you only need help with specific decisions, working with a designer who specializes in a particular phase may be the right fit.

Regardless of the approach, the most important thing is to choose a designer whose process aligns with your needs and expectations. And if full-service design sounds like what you’re looking for, I’d love to help!

If you’re interested in working together on your design project, we’d love to talk to you! Our process starts with a free 20-minute intro call.
